  • Know of Any Free or Cheap Courses? Please Share With the Rest of the Community

I personally am a course junkie. I am always on the prowl for free or cheap courses.

    Hello,
As for my response, I would suggest that depending upon interests, there are several I know of.

For Languages, I would suggest Duolingo
For College style courses of all other sorts, the following are cheap and/or free.
    Coursera
    Khan Academy
    Code Academy

The last 2 will likely be of more interest to the tech community then Coursera, although they have ramped up there selection there as well.

    Hope it helps,
    PHXTECH

I got my CCNA by studying two courses on Udemy. Total cost (not including the cost of the test): $20. And they were great courses. They have sales all the time, don't ever pay the listed price. Many courses are up to 90% off on a regular basis. Lots of good tech stuff. I'm currently studying Javascript (finally, never liked programming) for free (!) It's an introductory course, but the guy covers quite a bit. And, he sounds like Cheech Marin, so that's fun.

Udemy has always been one of my favorites. Here is another one I like a lot: http://freevideolectures.com/

Codecademy is also awesome if you are interested in development.

This is from a commercial website, I am not endorsing them or their products, but I think their training may be useful to field techs.

Pedro, I hope this doesn't cross the line, it is training. If it does i'll delete it, don't ban me please.

Until now, with the exception of CCNA, a Field tech did not need to really take courses to survive in the field. Most of the projects are cookie cutter anyway and the ones that aren't come with okay documentation. What I am thinking about now is the future of little to no hardware to service since everything is going cloud based virtual. I am not saying we field techs will be out of work, we just may have to conform to new technology. It is my opinion that today's field tech needs to understand more about virtual machines. VM Ware, Azure and of course AWS. Master how to work with Virtual Machines and Databases in the cloud and you will always be drowning in work. Knowing Linux and being comfortable in a Linux environment will help and learning Power shell will also come in handy since you will find yourself writing scripts to automate certain tasks such as cloud refreshes. You may find yourself working remotely more and more as well.
